He is now a full-time artist, a father and ready to put the needle in me as soon as I give the say-so.

Years ago, when I was in a band, this same friend would create flyers for our shows, shoot photographs and was one of my first friends to really dive into the tattoo world. Another reason I am looking forward to it is the chance to have a good friend of mine do the job. The experience itself will be fun, walking into a tattoo shop after so long, looking at all the art on the walls, hearing the buzzing of needles at work and smelling the odors of paint and sterilization chemicals. That’s the basic criteria for a respectable tattoo, I think. It’s simple, unique and represents an important time of my life. The idea I had in mind was the number 12 (for 2012), but have it depicted like the Union Jack flag blowing in the wind. I don’t want to go crazy and use a large piece of anatomical real estate. If there is any reason to mark up my body for all eternity, it is a trip like that.

This was also when the 2012 Olympics was going on, so needless to say it was a crazy experience, and one of the greatest times of my life. In 2012, I spent the summer studying abroad in London, which also included trips to Paris, Edinburgh and Amsterdam. The idea I have is something that’s actually been on my mind for a few years. It’s better to get the healing process out of the way before summer, if I’m going to commit. I can’t say I ever expected to go back to the tattoo shop anytime soon, but I’m thinking it might happen in the next few months. I could give explanations as to why each one has its sentimentality, but I don’t want to bore you. Since then, I’ve gotten four other tattoos: a band of roses and thorns on my left arm, the Japanese kanji for “courage” on my wrists, a phoenix on my right shoulder and the Virgo symbol on my left ring finger.

That needs to go on my arm.” I made the appointment at Lone Wolf Tattoo in Franklin, and before I knew it I was sitting in the movie theater, my shoulder burning and bandaged with a fresh tattoo, thinking about what the next one was going to be. My first guitar was a Yamaha Pacifica, or rather a Strat knockoff, and on the headstock there was the brand’s triple-tuning fork logo.

Being a guitar player, I thought about ways to commemorate that part of my life. Several of my friends had been getting their first, or third and fourth tattoos that year, and I knew it was something I would do eventually, but the first one had to be something special. I thought, what better way to show my charm and masculinity than to endure a couple hours of pain? I was 19, in town from college for a few days and had a date with a cute girl to see “Walk The Line” at the Franklin Theater. I don’t regret any of my tattoos, and after almost 10 years I’m considering getting a new addition to this scarred body. Or maybe I was just young, in a band and it was the cool thing to do. If you’ve ever met me in person, you’ll probably notice within a few seconds that I have been marked by an inksmith (is that a word?) for the betterment of my personal expression, so we say. Here’s a topic I’m sure everyone can relate to - tattoos and why they are so cool.
